What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a disorder in which your breathing repeatedly becomes interrupted during sleep. This interruption is a result of oral blockages, typically from the muscles in the back of the throat collapsing. In order to prevent suffocation from lack of oxygen, the body forces itself awake, making it difficult to achieve the deep states of sleep needed to feel rested upon waking up.

Is snoring a sign of sleep apnea?

Many symptoms can develop from sleep apnea. Understanding and paying attention to the symptoms of sleep apnea can be important in developing sleep apnea treatment. Snoring tends to be one of the most common symptoms of sleep apnea, as sleep apnea causes the soft tissues in the mouth to relax to the point of touching one another, causing the vibration of snoring. Other common symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Insomnia or restless sleep
  • Waking up at night short of breath
  • Snorting or choking sounds during the night
  • Headaches upon awakening
  • Extreme drowsiness throughout the day
